Palliative care is highly beneficial for breast cancer patients, especially if they opt for it right after diagnosis. This type of care can be used to relieve the side effects and symptoms related to cancer and its treatment, such as fatigue, nausea, and physical pain. With palliative care, these symptoms can be controlled easily, and the hospice patient can relay concerns about symptom management more easily to their oncology team.
Palliative care is much more important for people with metastatic breast cancer than those in the early stages of cancer. While the focus of palliative care in early breast cancer stages is symptom management and preventing side effects due to the treatment or cancer, palliative care for patients with metastatic breast cancer is slightly different.
Palliative care for metastatic breast cancer also incorporates spiritual and emotional guidance, support regarding decision-making, and grief counseling for the patient and their family.
Palliative care for breast cancer provides all types of support to the patient. Whether they want to discuss treatment options or have questions regarding their illness, palliative care teams are highly skilled in communication and explain all possible treatment and symptom management methods to the patient and their families. They can also help the patient discuss concerns regarding body image, depression, sexuality, anxiety, and any other worries that might be distressing them.
